Assault Rifles

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle also known as carbine firing ammunition. It has muzzle energies that are intermediate between those typical of pistol and battle rifle ammunition.

These rifles are often categorized between light machine guns that are intended more for a sustained automatic fire in a support role and submachine guns. These types of guns fire a handgun cartridge instead of a rifle cartridge.

Many assault rifles are the standard small arms in many of the modern armies and have almost replaced the larger and more powerful battle rifles.

Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47 and the M16 rifle. Semi-automatic rifles, including commercial versions of the AR-15, and “automatic” rifles limited to firing single shots.
